Unknown Wall & Attic Noise
From the top-rated critter removal company in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.
“we were hearing weird noises in the attic (spoiler: it was squirrels). Community were able to fit us in, immediately identified the problem, set the traps, sealed the entry point a couple of weeks later, and then checked in to make sure we were all clear. Truly, this is the only company to call. No ifs or buts. They are the best. You can trust them completely.”

Do you hear critters in your attic?
One of our most common inspection requests comes from homeowners that have a noise in their home. Often the first signs of mouse, squirrel, bat or raccoon infestation is the running, scratching, and thumping heard in attics, walls and crawl spaces.
Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti have many well preserved historic homes. The tree lined streets of Burns Park and Normal park are home to many of the most beautiful homes in the area. These homes are also attractive to the many critters that live in the mature trees lining the streets.

How can I identify what creature is living in my attic myself?
First, you will need a sturdy ladder to access your attic entrance door which is usually located in a bedroom closet ceiling. Put on your headlamp, respirator, and gloves and slowly open the attic door.
Look for live animals, animal droppings or chewed nuts and seeds. If nothing is observed from the opening you may want to carefully venture further into the attic space. Use extreme caution to carefully traverse the attic space so you do not fall through the ceiling drywall which is not intended to support much weight. Once you have located the animal or evidence of the animal it is time to trap and exclude them!

What Kind of noise are you hearing?
Critter problems can be difficult to identify from noises alone but here are a few key indicators of what may be lurking in your walls.
-
• Most active at night
• Often sound louder than you would expect
• Light scratching and running in attics, walls, ceilings
• Chewing (mice will sit in one location and chew nuts etc regularly)
• Noise changes location (not stationary)
• Leave many black/brown rice sized droppings
• Make quarter sized burrows in insulation
• Often leave hickory nuts and seed shells behind
-
• Most active indoors during the day, most often at sunrise and sunset
• Regular running back and forth as they build nests and cache food
• Aggressive chewing on wires, wood and walnuts
• Chasing and chipping at each other when multiple squirrels are present
• Leave walnuts, pine cones and hickory nuts behind
• Small black tic tac sized droppings behind
-
• Fully nocturnal, most active at night and early morning
• Often live in groups (up to 30), hearing multiple squirrels at one time is common
• Thumping followed by light scurrying when they glide and land near their entry point is commonly heard
• Use communal latrines leaving many piles of droppings and urine
-
• Loud scratching, chewing and banging noises when they are initially breaking into attics
• Fierce, loud fighting between adults
• Soft meowing and chattering of young offspring
• Loud scratching, running and thumping mostly at night
• Leave large deposits of droppings similar in appearance to cat droppings
-
• Light, stationary scratching, no running or chewing
• Some movement and scratching when bats are exiting after sunset and when they return before sunrise
• High pitched chirping
• Bats hibernate in attics and tend to move further indoors when temperatures fall below 20F, they are often heard for the first time on the coldest days of the year
Leave scattered droppings and droppings in piles, the droppings are slightly larger than mouse droppings often curved and tapered with a shiny appearance

“Over 4 visits (one/week), Community Pest Solutions successfully trapped 2 squirrels while painstakingly sealing off multiple possible access points. All attic activity has ceased and I am quite grateful for the thorough work Community put in. I highly recommend them and wish we had enlisted their services earlier.”

“We live in an old house and had been hearing rodents in our walls. We had Eric come out for a free initial inspection. It was obvious he knew what to look for. He provided us a reasonable quote same day. The rodent issue was resolved almost immediately after traps were installed. He also performed some carpentry and caulking to the exterior. Thanks again!”

“A nice, small company that cares about their clients. I was impressed by their level of communication. Derek did a through inspection and looked all around the house for entry points. He then placed traps all around the places where mice were clearly coming in. I appreciate the follow-up visits to ensure the mice are caught and the house is sealed up. Friendly, helpful and kind service!”

“Caught the groundhog that messed up my patio just about 20 minutes after the live trap was set! Jamie did an awesome job setting up the live trap and explaining everything to me. He’s knowledgeable, professional and very responsive. Would definitely recommend to others who have similar issues as I did!”

“Derek has been helping us over the past few months and he has been a pleasure to work with. He has been very transparent about his work, the services the company offers, and how to best trap pests. He visits our house weekly and is always on time. Derek also went above and beyond by cleaning up our DIY attempt to seal entry points that pests use to get in. Would definitely recommend this business to others.
