Bird damage, Nevermore

Birds are an extremely important part of our ecosystem and most noninvasive species are protected by federal law. Many are actually great pest control partners! Hawks and owls eat rodents and smaller songbirds eat insect pests. BUT some bird species are invasive pests themselves. Several types of birds have infested the Ann Arbor area from other regions of the world causing damage to homes and businesses, spreading disease and driving out native birds from their natural habitat.

Signs You Have a Bird Problem

Invasive birds are active all year in Michigan but are most prevalent during their nesting season in spring and early summer. You may have a bird problem if you notice:

  • Screeching, squawking and chirping in vents, attics, ceilings or walls

  • Bird droppings or nesting materials around vents or soffits

  • Birds regularly roosting on your roof

  • Pecking on wood siding and pillars

How We’LL SOLVE IT

Our technicians will provide a thorough FREE* inspection of your home's exterior, roof, vents and attic. We will identify the bird entry points around your home, create a plan to evict them and provide the appropriate exclusion work necessary to help keep them out for good!

THE USUAL SUSPECTS

Starlings

STARLINGS

The screeching European starling is one of the most common invasive bird pests in Michigan. Their preference for nesting in voids makes them regular home invaders. Starlings often nest in bathroom vents using their beaks to lift vent flaps and fly right in. They will also nest in woodpecker holes occasionally getting stuck on wall voids making a real mess! Starlings will pack vents with nesting material causing ventilation issues. They can also bring along large populations of bird bird mites which travel inside homes biting your family!

SPARROWs

House sparrows are small brown birds often seen alongside native birds emptying bird feeders in the Ann Arbor area. As their name sake suggests, they love to live in houses! Sparrows often live in the soffits of newly constructed homes, gable vents, bathroom vents and any other hole they can find. Sparrows fill attics and vents with nesting material, deposit large amounts of droppings inside and outside of homes and should be removed as soon as possible.

WOODPECKERS

Woodpeckers are fascinating, native birds that can also be extremely destructive. Woodpeckers cause damage to homes when they are foraging for wood infesting pests such as carpenter ants, carpenter bee larvae and termites. Much of the damage we see is nesting behavior such as golf ball holes in siding, chimneys and pillars. The birds are detecting a hollow void and treating your home like a hollow tree! Due to woodpeckers being federally protected our Community Pest technicians will use deterrent methods to help persuade the birds to move elsewhere (sorry neighbors). In the rare instance of a bird that is not persuaded by deterrents we can request a federal permit from the US Fish and Wildlife agency to remove the bird.

What we do

Bird eviction, exclusion, and deterrents

  • Along the roofline of many homes there are areas that were not completely sealed during construction and areas that have separated over time due to weather infiltration and homes settling. These are some of the most common entry points for birds. Community pest exclusion experts use colomatched metal flashing, color matched screen and industrial sealant to exclude pests from entering through these areas.

  • Gable vents are the large open vents at the peaks of many older homes. These vents allow cross ventilation to help move air through your attic. Gable vents are also very common entry points for birds. Our Community Pest exclusion professionals will determine if your gable vents are actually bird entry points and they will screen them with heavy duty materials to keep the critters out permanently.

  • Bathroom vents often have small unsecure flaps that allow birds to enter. Once inside the vent tube they will clog it with nesting materials and peck or chew holes in the tube creating a ventilation disaster. We can evict the birds and install permanent bird proof vent covers to stop them for good.

  • Deterrents can be used successfully to help prevent woodpeckers from causing further damage to your home. Our Community Pest technicians will assess your woodpecker damage and install the appropriate amount of high quality deterrent flashers in the most strategic areas around your home.

REAL Bird CONTROL REVIEWS FROM YOUR NEIGHBORS

“Extremely professional service! I had some birds in my soffits, and they came out, inspected the house and set up an evacuation tube to get the birds out, but not back in. They also patched up holes to prevent any other critters from getting in. All communication was clear, they arrived on time, and completed the job well. I will hire again, should I have any pest control needs.”

“Last winter I read how horrible Starlings are for native birds and decided to seek help evicting them from the vent in our second story. I wish I hadn't let this go on so long. Community Pest Solutions had a humane solution; they waited until the fledglings were gone and then put an exclusion cover on (birds can get out, but not in). They returned about a week later to put the permanent cover on the vent. They made three trips in total to our house and each visit was on time. Their plan was explained well and carried out in a friendly manner.”

“Fantastic service every time! These guys are great, got rid of a bat, mice, birds, hornets, stink bugs, flies, you name it they got it out of my house and back to nature! Could not be happier with a pest control service. Most of all I appreciate that they don’t just remove things the fix the holes they come in thru! Highly highly recommend!”

— Gary M.

“These guys were fantastic!! Even replaced some vent covers so birds wouldn’t get in. Can’t wait to see the video of the bats leaving!”
